When I was young, Dad seemed to always be working. He worked 5 days a week at Hughes Aircraft and then many times he worked Saturdays and sometimes Sundays at B&B selling guns. I valued the time I got to spend with him. He would go shooting often enough and I went with him several times to the Oak Tree shooting range. I don't have to look far to find where I got my lifelong love of guns and the shooting sports. Dad would reload shotgun shells in the garage before a match. I could go out and work the lever on the reloading press or push the shuttle back and forth between powder and shot. These are some of my fondest early memories.
When I got older, Dad would take me biking or hiking the trails around Simi Valley. I was in the boy scouts and Dad would go along on my hiking and camping trips. We eventually climbed Mt. Baden Powell and then Mt. Whitney, the highest point in the lesser 48 states. When I started expressing an interest in Aircraft, Dad would take me out to the local airports to watch takeoffs and landings. We would go to all of the local air shows: Pt. Mugu, Edwards AFB, El Toro, March AFB. I eventually made a career of it and retired from the Air Force a few years back.
Before I went off to boot camp, Dad took me to Arizona to sightsee. It was a long trip, just him and I. Looking back, this was probably as much for him as it was for I. He probably sensed we would not have time for this type of one-on-one moving forward. I'm glad for the times we had and thankful that he's in a better place. I can no longer call and talk about our shared interests, but I have great memories to fall back on. Love you, Dad. Goodbye.
