Janice Eleanor Erickson Obituary
Janice Eleanor Erickson was welcomed into the arms of her Savior on May 26, 2026, surrounded by the love of her family. While our hearts grieve her loss, we rejoice in the promise of eternal life and give thanks to God for the gift of Jan's life. She will be remembered for her unwavering kindness, gentle spirit, and devoted love for her family and friends.
Jan was born on July 1, 1942, to Vernon and Eleanor Nelson in Pelican Rapids, Minnesota. She grew up on the family farm alongside her older brother, David, surrounded by a large and loving extended family. The many happy hours spent with cousins became treasured memories, and her lifelong bond with her cousin Ingrid was so special that Jan affectionately referred to her as a sister. Jan accepted the Lord Jesus into her heart as a child, was baptized at nine years old along with her brother and parents and became a member of Pelican Rapids Baptist Church.
After graduating high school, Jan attended the University of Minnesota where she earned a degree in Home Economics. It was there that she met the love of her life, Duane Erickson. Their marriage began a partnership that would span decades, built on faith, devotion and shared purpose. While Duane completed veterinary school, Jan taught junior high school. Following his graduation, they embarked on a new adventure with their two-month-old son in 1967, moving to California where Duane began practicing veterinary medicine.
In 1972, Duane started his own practice. Jan played an integral role in the success of the animal hospital over the years, serving in many capacities but especially in managing the front office and bookkeeping. Yet her greatest calling was found at home, where she and Duane lovingly raised their two children, Bob and Nancy. Jan filled her days with preparing special meals, driving to music lessons, sporting events and 4-H meetings, helping with homework, and creating a home filled with warmth, encouragement and love.
Sewing was one of Jan's lifelong passions. Her talent and meticulous craftmanship blessed many family members and friends over the years. As her children grew older, quilting became another creative outlet, and she often joked, "So much fabric, so little time." Her beautiful handmade creations included a myriad of dresses, multiple bridal party dresses in family weddings, treasured quilts, and countless gifts lovingly stitched for those she cherished.
Jan and Duane enjoyed traveling together and creating lasting memories with family. Their adventures took them to Japan, Hong Kong, Sweden, Denmark, Cancun, Canada, and multiple destinations throughout the US. She treasured visits with relatives in Minnesota and Illinois, and among all her travels, Maui remained her favorite destination. After Duane's retirement in 2012, they were able to spend even more time together, enjoying the blessings of life.
Above all else, Jan treasured her family. She delighted in her grandchildren and great-granddaughter, always eager to spend time with them. Whether she was creating a handmade gift, playing games, reading books, cooking and baking, or simply sharing in everyday moments, she poured her love into each relationship. Her family will forever cherish the warmth, generosity, and steadfast love she gave so freely.
Jan's faith in Jesus Christ was foundational. For her entire life, she faithfully served and worshiped within her church community. She also devoted her time to Operation Gratitude, helping prepare care packages for service members deployed overseas. Her quiet faith, servant's heart, and compassionate spirit reflected the love of Christ to all who knew her.
Jan was preceded in death by her parents, Vernon and Eleanor Nelson, and her brother David Nelson.
She is survived by her beloved husband of nearly 63 years, Duane Erickson; her son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Theresa Erickson, and their children, Kailey Kerstein, Carlie Gately, Natalie Erickson and Zachary Erickson; her great-granddaughter Raelynn Gately; and her daughter and son-in-law Nancy and Justin Hamilton, and their children, Eric Hamilton, Garrett Hamilton, and Ian Hamilton.
